Section 22A
In case of disinherited corpse
, if disinherited corpse is found, the police should take possession of the corpse, identify the corpse and give a bond for the time of death. If the rightful owner is not found or is not understood, the body should be handed over to the Institute of Medical Sciences if it is necessary for the purpose of the study. Where there is no such institute or if such an institute is not necessary, the police should conduct the cremation without the help of the local village or municipality or social organization. However, in case of death due to accident, suicide or in a suspicious situation, the body can be handed over to the research institute or cremated only after completing the investigation work, which requires an autopsy as per the current law.
